  Remember Me

 Luke 22: 12-23

The final meal Jesus had with his disciples was not a last minute briefing, or a review of theology, but simply a gathering with those whom he loved, coupled with a simple request:“Remember Me.”  The meal reminds us that our faith is not a system of doctrines  or dogma the church teaches, but is a faith in God based on the love of Christ so beautifully expressed in Jesus’ words, “Remember Me.”

Coming to know Jesus in not a matter of believing something so much as it is a matter having a relationship with him, and how beautifully that is expressed in this meal of remembrance.   Somehow we have difficulty grasping this basic truth of the gospel as we want to define our faith in doctrine, theology, and liturgies.

Like his entire life, a life of simplicity, Jesus brings his ministry to a conclusion with this simple meal and requested that he be so remembered, not with monuments or trophies but simply in a gathering of his people to remember his love in the breaking of bread and the sharing of the cup.

Jesus’ purpose of ministry was to point people to God.  While God is eternal and the ethereal.

In this act of the simple meal of remembrance, Jesus brings God within reach of human understanding.  Who can fathom the eternal or infinity?  But a knowledge that God is to be remembered in the approachability of his Son, brings faith into grasp.

Remember Me—such a simple way to touch the eternal.
